How to Clean Headlights: Water Spots vs Haze

Most headlight lenses on modern cars are plastic, not glass. Before you clean them, figure out what you’re looking at: white rings and dots that sit on top of the lens are water spots, and a cloudy, dull lens all over is haze. Sud Factory’s Spotless X2 can remove hazing, and you apply it by hand with a microfiber pad, no buffer needed. Then SFX1 protects the headlights. A 16 oz bottle of either is $39.99 $79.98.

Key points

  • Check whether your lenses are plastic or glass. Most modern lenses are plastic.
  • Water spots sit on the surface. Haze clouds the whole lens.
  • Always wash first. Don’t scrub a dry, dirty lens.
  • Spotless X2 can remove hazing. Work it in by hand. No buffer needed.
  • Protect the clean lenses with SFX1 (up to 12 months).
  • Glass headlights on older cars: keep Dissolve X2 off them. It contains buffered ammonium bifluoride, so it isn’t for glass.

Water spots or haze? How to tell

Water spots

  • White or gray rings and dots, often in the shape of drops
  • Show up after a wash that air-dried, a sprinkler, or rain on a sunny day
  • Sit on top of the lens. The lens under them is still clear.

Haze

  • The whole lens looks cloudy, foggy or dull
  • Gets worse slowly, over months and years, on the side of the car that sees the most sun
  • Doesn’t change after a wash

You can have both. A hazy lens collects water spots too.

Why Hawaii is hard on headlights

We started Sud Factory in Hawaii because the islands are brutal on cars: relentless UV, heavy salt air and mineral-rich hard water. The sun works on the plastic, and the hard water and sprinklers leave mineral spots on top. Hard water spots left too long can turn into etching, so don’t wait to deal with them.

How to clean water spots off headlights

Safety first: Spotless X2’s Safety Data Sheet uses the signal word “Danger” and says it “causes severe skin burns and eye damage.” Wear protective gloves and eye protection, and read the label first. Spotless X2 SDS · All SDS sheets

You’ll need: car wash soap, a bucket of water, a soft microfiber wash mitt, Spotless X2, a microfiber applicator pad, a damp towel, a clean dry microfiber, SFX1, gloves, and eye protection.

  1. Check the lens. Plastic or glass? Most modern lenses are plastic. If you aren’t sure, check your owner’s manual.
  2. Work cool and shaded. Clean the lens when it’s cool, with the lights off, out of direct sun.
  3. Wash first. Wash the lens with car wash soap and a soft mitt, and rinse well. Grit plus pressure is what scratches, and plastic scratches easily.
  4. Dry right away. Dry the lens with a clean microfiber towel so new spots don’t form.
  5. Use Spotless X2 on what’s left. Test a small corner first. Put a quarter-sized amount on a clean, dry microfiber applicator pad and rub it over the lens in a cross-hatch pattern with light pressure. Wipe off with a damp towel, rinse, and dry. Heavy buildup can take 2–3 passes. Keep Spotless X2 off the paint around the headlight.
  6. Protect. Apply SFX1 to the clean, dry lens: mist it on the lens or a microfiber towel, spread it evenly, then buff with a clean dry towel. Reapply when water stops beading.
  7. Don’t use abrasives. Skip scouring pads, steel wool and household abrasive cleaners on plastic lenses.

Hazy or cloudy headlights

If the lens is cloudy all over and a wash doesn’t change it, it isn’t a water spot. It’s haze. Spotless X2 can remove hazing: use the same steps above (step 5), one headlight at a time, with 2–3 passes on heavy haze. Then protect the lens with SFX1, because SFX1 protects headlights.

If you can feel a crack or chip in the lens, or there’s moisture inside it, that’s damage, not haze. Have a detail shop or a parts shop look at it.

Glass headlights

Some older and classic cars have glass headlight lenses. Keep Dissolve X2 off them: it contains buffered ammonium bifluoride, so it isn’t for glass, including glass mirrors. For water spots on car glass, see how to remove hard water spots from car windows.

FAQ

How do I clean water spots and haze off headlights?

Wash and dry the lens first, working cool and out of direct sun. Then test a small corner, put a quarter-sized amount of Spotless X2 on a microfiber applicator pad, rub it over the lens in a cross-hatch pattern with light pressure, wipe off with a damp towel, rinse and dry. Heavy buildup can take 2–3 passes. Finish with SFX1 to protect the lens.

Can Spotless X2 remove headlight haze?

Yes. Spotless X2 can remove hazing. It’s applied by hand with a microfiber pad, and no buffer is needed.

How do I protect my headlights afterward?

Apply SFX1 to the clean, dry lens. SFX1 protects headlights, lasts up to 12 months, and no buffer is needed. Reapply when water stops beading.

Are headlight lenses glass or plastic?

Most modern headlight lenses are plastic. Some older and classic cars have glass lenses. Check your owner’s manual if you aren’t sure.

How do I tell water spots from headlight haze?
