Ceramic Spray vs. Ceramic Coating: SFX1 or HybridCoat?

“Ceramic” is on half the bottles in the detailing aisle. Some are quick sprays, some are true coatings, and they are not the same thing. Here’s how our two protection products compare, so you can pick the right one.

Key takeaways

  • SFX1 is a spray-on nano ceramic: minutes to apply, up to 12 months.
  • HybridCoat is a true coating: more prep, up to 5 years.
  • Both need clean, spot-free paint to start.
  • Pick based on how much time you want to spend, not just how long it lasts.

What “ceramic” really means

Ceramic protection uses silica-based (SiO2) chemistry that bonds to the surface and leaves a slick, water-repelling layer. The difference between products is mostly concentration, how they bond and how they’re applied.

Sprays like SFX1 lay down a thin layer quickly. Coatings like HybridCoat, with 80% SiO2 and 5% graphene oxide, build a thicker, harder layer that cures over 24 hours.

The short version

SFX1 HybridCoat
What it is Spray-on nano ceramic True ceramic coating with graphene oxide
How long it lasts Up to 12 months (about 6 on average) Up to 5 years
Application Mist on, wipe off, done in minutes Apply in layers, flash, buff, cure 24 hours
Surface Wet or dry, paint, glass, wheels, plastic Fully prepped paint, glass, wheels, chrome, trim, gelcoat
Best for Easy, regular protection and gloss Long-term protection you set up once

SFX1: the quick win

SFX1 is a nano ceramic you spray on and wipe off. You get instant wet-look gloss and water that beads up and flies off, and it lasts up to 12 months, about 6 on average with no upkeep. It works on a wet or dry surface, so you can do it right after a wash.

What you’ll need

  • HybridCoat (with suede applicator)
  • Several clean microfiber towels
  • Clay bar and polish for prep
  • Dissolve X2 and Spotless X2
  • Good lighting or a flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves, eye protection, ventilation
  1. Clean the surface. For spots or stains, use Spotless X2 or Dissolve X2 first.
  2. Mist SFX1 onto a panel.
  3. Wipe and buff with a clean microfiber towel.

HybridCoat: set it and forget it

HybridCoat is a true ceramic coating: 80% SiO2 plus 5% graphene oxide, with a 10H hardness rating and up to 5 years of protection from one application. It takes more care to apply, but you don’t redo it every few weeks.

  1. Prep. Remove all water spots, dirt and wax. A paint correction (clay bar and polish) first is strongly recommended, because you lock in the paint as it is.
  2. Apply. Shake well, put a few drops on the suede applicator and apply in a cross-hatch pattern, half a hood at a time.
  3. Flash and buff. Wait 3-4 minutes for a “rainbow” flash, then buff with a clean microfiber towel.
  4. Second layer and cure. After 5 minutes, repeat for a second layer, then let it cure 24 hours before it sees moisture.
Heads up

HybridCoat is a highly flammable liquid: keep it away from heat, sparks and open flames, use it with good ventilation, and wear gloves and eye protection. Details are on its Safety Data Sheet.

Which one should you get?

  • Pick SFX1 if you want gloss and water beading today, wash your car regularly, and like a 5-minute routine.
  • Pick HybridCoat if your paint is already corrected (or about to be) and you want years of protection without reapplying.
  • Either way, start clean. Coatings and sprays lock in whatever is under them. Take spots off first with Spotless X2 on glass and Dissolve X2 on paint.

Can you use both?

Yes. Many owners coat once with HybridCoat after a full prep, then use a spray as a topper between washes. Either way, the most important step is the same: the surface has to be clean, spot-free and, for a coating, wax-free before you start.

Common mistakes to avoid

Coating over water spots. They get sealed in.

Expecting a spray to last like a coating. They are different products.

Skipping prep for HybridCoat. Prep decides the result.

Applying either one in hot sun. Work in shade on cool panels.

A simple care schedule

When What to do
SFX1 Reapply when water stops beading, often around 6 months.
HybridCoat One application lasts up to 5 years.
Both Gentle washes and drying keep them working.
