Meguiar’s is one of the best-known names in car care, and its Water Spot Remover (A3714) is on a lot of shelves. Our Dissolve X2 does the same broad job: taking mineral spots off paint. Here’s an honest look at where they differ, so you can choose based on your car rather than the label.
- Both are liquids made to remove water spots from paint by hand, and both say they won’t harm clear coat.
- Meguiar’s says its remover is for glossy paint only, not flat, matte or satin finishes.
- Dissolve X2 is made for glossy and matte paint, vinyl wraps, wheels, chrome, trim and gelcoat.
- Neither removes etching. That takes polishing.
What each product is
Meguiar’s Water Spot Remover (A3714) is a liquid sold for removing water spots from vehicle exteriors without harming paint or clear coat, and for improving clarity and gloss. Meguiar’s and its retailers list it for glossy painted surfaces, glass, chrome, hard plastic and metal, and note that it is not for flat, matte or satin finishes. You apply a small amount to a soft cloth or pad and work it in small circular motions, two or three passes if needed, by hand or with a dual action polisher.
Dissolve X2 is our paint remover. It takes water spots, mineral deposits, red dirt, rust stains, tar, sap and bugs off paint and clear coat, plus wheels, chrome, vinyl, plastic and rubber trim, mirrors and metal. It’s non-abrasive, works by hand with a microfiber, and is also used on matte paint, vinyl wraps and boat gelcoat.

Which one should you buy?
- Your car has matte paint or a wrap: Meguiar’s says its remover isn’t for those finishes. Dissolve X2 is made for them.
- You want one bottle for paint, wheels and trim, and red dirt or tar too: that’s what Dissolve X2 is built for.
- You have a glossy car, light spots, and want something from the local parts store today: Meguiar’s is easy to find and made for that job.
- Glass is the main problem: use a glass remover like Spotless X2. See our windshield guide.
How to use Dissolve X2
What you’ll need
- Dissolve X2
- Microfiber applicator or towel
- Clean, damp microfiber towels
- Car wash soap and mitt
- Nitrile gloves
- Eye protection
Dissolve X2 is a strong acid cleaner: its Safety Data Sheet lists it as causing severe skin burns and eye damage. Wear gloves and eye protection, keep it off your skin, and read the label before you start. Every sheet is on our SDS page.
- Wash and dry the area and work on a cool panel in the shade.
- Apply a small amount of Dissolve X2 to a microfiber applicator or towel.
- Work it over the stain. Older, heavier spots may need a second pass.
- Wipe clean with a clean, damp microfiber towel and check it in good light.
Test on a small, low area first, especially on a wrap, matte paint or a coated car. Then work one panel at a time in the shade.

Common mistakes to avoid
Using a gloss-only product on matte paint. Check the label for your finish before you start.
Working on a hot panel. Products dry too fast and leave residue.
Rubbing grit into the paint. Wash first, every time.
Expecting a remover to fix etching. If outlines stay, see spots vs. etching.
