Adam’s Polishes has a loyal following, and its Water Spot Remover shows up in a lot of detailing carts. Our Dissolve X2 goes after the same problem: hard water spots baked onto paint. Here’s an honest side-by-side so you can pick the one that fits your car.
- Both are acid-based removers that dissolve mineral deposits by hand. Neither one is a polish, and neither one fixes etching.
- Adam’s is a thickened formula for paint and glass, and its maker says it’s safe on clear coat, glass and ceramic-coated surfaces.
- Dissolve X2 is made for paint and clear coat plus matte paint, vinyl wraps, wheels, chrome, trim and boat gelcoat.
- For glass, we make a separate remover: Spotless X2.
What each product is
Adam’s Water Spot Remover is sold for water spots and stains on paintwork and glass. Adam’s describes it as a heavy-duty formula that uses a mild acid and specialty surfactants to neutralize and dissolve the minerals left behind by hard water. It’s thickened so it clings, and the maker says it’s safe on clear coat, glass and ceramic-coated surfaces.
Dissolve X2 is our paint remover. It takes water spots, mineral deposits, red dirt, rust stains, tar, sap and bugs off paint and clear coat, and it’s also used on matte paint, vinyl wraps, wheels, chrome, plastic and rubber trim and boat gelcoat. It’s non-abrasive and works by hand with a microfiber.

How Adam’s says to use it
Adam’s directions call for a washed surface out of direct sun. You moisten a microfiber applicator, work a 2×2 foot area in a cross-hatch pattern, and don’t let it dwell for more than 30 seconds. Then you re-clean and wipe away the excess. For old, baked-on spots, the maker suggests repeating it, 30 seconds at a time, and sealing the surface with a wax or sealant afterward.
One warning is worth knowing: Adam’s says to take special care on glass and keep the dwell time under 30 seconds, because the acid could etch glass.
Which one should you buy?
- Your car is ceramic coated and you want a remover sold as coating-safe: Adam’s says its formula is safe on ceramic-coated surfaces, so it’s the more direct fit.
- You want one bottle for paint and glass: Adam’s is made for both. With us, you’d use Dissolve X2 on paint and Spotless X2 on glass, which come together in the WATER SPOT Removal Bundle.
- You have matte paint, a wrap, or a boat: Dissolve X2 is made for matte paint, vinyl wraps and gelcoat.
- Spots plus red dirt, tar or sap, on paint, wheels and trim: that’s the job Dissolve X2 is built for.
How to use Dissolve X2
What you’ll need
- Dissolve X2
- Microfiber applicator or towel
- Clean, damp microfiber towels
- Car wash soap and mitt
- Nitrile gloves
- Eye protection
Dissolve X2 is a strong acid cleaner: its Safety Data Sheet lists it as causing severe skin burns and eye damage. Wear gloves and eye protection, keep it off your skin, and read the label before you start. Every sheet is on our SDS page.
- Wash and dry the area and work on a cool panel in the shade.
- Apply a small amount of Dissolve X2 to a microfiber applicator or towel.
- Work it over the stain. Older, heavier spots may need a second pass.
- Wipe clean with a clean, damp microfiber towel and check it in good light.
Never mix it with other cleaners. On a coated car, follow the coating maker’s advice and test a small spot first.
After the spots are gone, protect the paint. A coat of SFX1 helps water bead and roll off, so fewer drops sit and dry into new spots.

Common mistakes to avoid
Working on a hot panel. Acid removers dry too fast in the sun and can leave marks of their own.
Leaving product to sit. Wipe off as you go. Adam’s sets a 30-second limit for a reason.
Expecting a remover to fix etching. If outlines stay after a proper clean, see spots vs. etching.
A simple care schedule

No. Both are acid-based removers you work in by hand, but Adam’s is made for paint and glass, while Dissolve X2 is made for paint, wraps, wheels, trim and gelcoat.
Can I use Adam’s Water Spot Remover on glass?
Yes. Its maker lists glass, but warns not to let it dwell for more than 30 seconds because the acid could etch glass.
Can I use Dissolve X2 on my windshield?
Dissolve X2 is for paint and trim. For windshields, windows and mirrors, use Spotless X2.
Which one is safe on a ceramic coating?
Adam’s says its remover is safe on ceramic-coated surfaces. For any coated car, follow your coating maker’s care advice and test a small area first.
