Griot’s Garage is a name a lot of car people trust, and its Water Spot Remover is an easy grab at the parts store. Our Dissolve X2 goes after the same white rings on paint, but it’s built very differently. Here’s an honest comparison so you can pick the right bottle for the spots you actually have.
- Griot’s is a spray-on, wipe-off formula. Its maker says its patented chemistry replaces harmful and corrosive acids, and it’s sold for above-surface spots.
- Dissolve X2 is a strong acid cleaner you work in by hand, made for stubborn, bonded mineral deposits on paint.
- Griot’s lists paint, chrome, plastic trim and glass. Dissolve X2 covers paint, matte paint, wraps, wheels, chrome, trim and gelcoat, and we make Spotless X2 for glass.
- Neither one fixes etching. If outlines stay after a proper clean, the surface needs polishing.
What each product is
Griot’s Garage Water Spot Remover comes in a 22 oz spray bottle. Griot’s describes it as a way to remove stubborn, above-surface water spots from exterior vehicle surfaces, and says it’s safe and effective on paint, chrome, plastic trim and glass. The maker says its formula dissolves and removes minerals from most hard surfaces, and that its patented chemistry replaces harmful and corrosive acids.
Dissolve X2 is our paint remover. It takes water spots, mineral deposits, red dirt, rust stains, tar, sap and bugs off paint and clear coat, and it’s also used on matte paint, vinyl wraps, wheels, chrome, plastic and rubber trim and boat gelcoat. It’s non-abrasive and works by hand with a microfiber. It’s a strong acid cleaner, made for the spots gentler sprays leave behind.

Gentle spray vs. strong acid: why it matters
Water spots aren’t all the same. Fresh spots from last weekend’s wash are minerals sitting loosely on top of the paint. Spots from sprinklers, well water or months in the sun get baked on and bond to the clear coat. A gentle, quick-wipe spray is built for the first kind. A strong acid remover is built for the second.
Dissolve X2 is made for spots that have already survived washing and milder removers. More in water spot types on car paint.
Which one should you buy?
- Light, fresh spots and you want one quick spray for paint and glass: Griot’s is the more convenient pick, and its maker says the formula replaces harmful, corrosive acids.
- Spots that came back after a wash, or rings from sprinklers or well water: that’s the bonded buildup Dissolve X2 is made for.
- Matte paint, a vinyl wrap or a boat: Dissolve X2 is made for matte paint, wraps and gelcoat.
- Spots plus red dirt, tar or sap: Dissolve X2 handles those too. For glass, pair it with Spotless X2 in the WATER SPOT Removal Bundle.
How to use Dissolve X2
What you’ll need
- Dissolve X2
- Microfiber applicator or towel
- Clean, damp microfiber towels
- Car wash soap and mitt
- Nitrile gloves
- Eye protection
Dissolve X2 is a strong acid cleaner: its Safety Data Sheet lists it as causing severe skin burns and eye damage. Wear gloves and eye protection, keep it off your skin, and read the label before you start. Every sheet is on our SDS page.
- Wash and dry the area and work on a cool panel in the shade.
- Apply a small amount of Dissolve X2 to a microfiber applicator or towel.
- Work it over the stain. Older, heavier spots may need a second pass.
- Wipe clean with a clean, damp microfiber towel and check it in good light.
Never mix it with other cleaners. On a coated car, follow the coating maker’s advice and test a small spot first.
Try the gentlest fix first, then step up to Dissolve X2. Once the paint is clean, a coat of SFX1 helps water bead and roll off, so fewer drops dry into new spots.

Common mistakes to avoid
Working on a hot panel. Any remover dries too fast in the sun and can leave marks of its own.
Expecting a remover to fix etching. If outlines stay after a proper clean, see spots vs. etching.
A simple care schedule
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Every wash | Wash in the shade and dry the car fully, top down. |
| When spots appear | Wipe fresh spots right away before they bond. |
| If they won’t budge | Step up to Dissolve X2 on paint, Spotless X2 on glass. |
| After a deep clean | Protect with SFX1 and re-protect when water stops beading. |
