Side mirrors are the last thing to dry after a wash. Water drips out of the housing, runs down the glass and dries into spots, right where you need to see.
- Mirrors spot because their housings keep dripping after you dry the car.
- Use only a small amount of Spotless X2 on mirror glass.
- Keep product off painted mirror caps.
- Shake out and blow out the housings after washing.
Why mirrors are spot magnets
Side mirrors are hollow. During a wash, water runs inside the housing, then drips back out over the glass for several minutes after you think you’re done. Those drips dry in the sun and leave neat rows of spots right in your line of sight.
Mirrors also sit at the front edge of the car, so they take sprinkler spray, road mist and bug splatter head-on.

Why mirrors spot so easily
The mirror housing traps water. After you dry the car, it keeps dripping onto the glass, and those drops dry in the sun. Over time the minerals build into a cloudy layer that makes lane changes harder to judge, especially at night.
How to clean them
Spotless X2 is a strong acid cleaner: its Safety Data Sheet lists it as causing severe skin burns and eye damage. Wear gloves and eye protection, keep it off your skin, and read the label before you start. Every sheet is on our SDS page.
What you’ll need
- Spotless X2
- Small microfiber applicator pad
- Microfiber towel
- Leaf blower or air (optional)
- Nitrile gloves
- Eye protection
- Work on cool, dry glass in the shade. Start clean so you can see every spot.
- Use a quarter-sized dab of Spotless X2 on a microfiber applicator pad. A little covers a big area.
- Cross-hatch it over the spots, up and down then side to side. Heavy buildup may need a second pass.
- Wipe with a damp towel, then buff dry with a clean microfiber.
Mirror glass is small, so use even less product than on a windshield. A pea-sized amount on the pad is often enough. Keep it off painted mirror caps and wipe any that lands there right away.
Stop the drip
- After a wash, fold the mirrors in and out a few times to shake out trapped water, then dry the glass again.
- Blow out the housings with a leaf blower or air if you have one.
- A coat of SFX1 on the glass helps water bead and run off.

Heated and auto-dimming mirrors
Many mirrors have heating elements or auto-dimming layers. These are behind or inside the glass, so cleaning the outer surface is fine. Use light pressure, a soft pad and a small amount of product, and never pry at the glass or its edges.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using too much product. Mirrors are small; excess runs onto the paint.
Drying the mirrors first. They keep dripping. Dry them last.
Pressing hard. Let the product work; repeat instead of pushing.
Forgetting the mirror caps. Wipe any product off paint right away.
